Squeaking vs. Grinding Brakes: What Your Car is Telling You

Don't ignore brake noises. Diagnose whether a squeak is just dust or a wear indicator, or if grinding means severe rotor damage. Applies generally to most makes and passenger car models.

Step 1

Determine When the Noise Occurs

Listen carefully to hear if the noise is high-pitched, persistent, or only occurs when you actively apply pressure to the brake pedal.

Step 2

Identify Wear Indicator Squeals

A high-pitched squeaking or squealing sound that goes away when braking is usually a built-in wear indicator tab rubbing the rotor. This tells you your pad life is under 15%.

Step 3

Identify Metal grinding

A harsh, metal-on-metal grinding sound means the pad friction material has completely worn away, and the steel backing plate is scoring the rotors. Stop driving immediately and change both pads and rotors.
