How to Check Brake Pad Thickness Without Removing the Wheel

Learn how to inspect your brake pads for wear using visual indicators, a simple inspection mirror, or thickness gauges. Applies generally to most makes and passenger car models.

Step 1

Position Vehicle & Look Through Spokes

Park your vehicle on a level surface. Look through the openings in your wheel spokes to locate the metal brake caliper assembly.

Step 2

Measure Outer Pad Friction Material

Use a flashlight and a pocket ruler, or thickness gauge, to measure the remaining friction material on the brake pad. Compare this to the metal backing plate.

Step 3

Evaluate Pad Condition

If the friction material is 3mm (1/8 inch) or less, the brake pads are worn and must be replaced soon. If you hear squeaking or squealing, the wear indicators are active.
